Ares the Beast: The End of the Long War?
We have watched the overthrow of the long and bizarre rule of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, which resembled a kind of dynasty. This long and ugly war is finally over. The Syrian government's sudden collapse, seemingly determined to restore unity and end the civil war, is undoubtedly the result of a broader network disintegration and the breaking of crucial links. In this case, Iran is clearly the state holding the chain, with Russia as the main power supporting it.
Russia has faced such an outcome because it has made a series of important mistakes. The biggest strategic mistake was to unconditionally support an outright fundamentalist, theocratic state like Iran in the Middle East by positioning it as the main power in the south. They treated such a backward and conservative political regime as "representative of a mystical intellectual tradition". The reality was, of course, not like this. The events in the region are irrefutable evidence of this. Let me be clear: we are talking about a multi-layered, complex geography inhabited by social groups with different beliefs. People are sick and tired of religious and ethnic oppression, poverty and war. By imposing their own understanding, Iran and its affiliated forces have both won the hatred of the people and kept their opponents alive. This is evident even in Lebanon, a country where Iran has a strong presence. Those who made this choice and stood behind Iran were wrong. It is too late for them.In relationships, the enemy of your enemy is not always your friend. It is clear that this understanding is both philosophically and politically incorrect. Russia has fallen into this trap because it has pursued a foreign policy along these lines for a long time.History cannot be reversed. This is especially true in the current age of technology. Your politics are irrelevant. Technology and communication now allow people to interpret their position in the world in different ways. It was inevitable: people would run to caves in droves in this age of inspiration and glamour. It is an undeniable fact that even small children have smartphones in their hands today.
The alternative to past imperialist wars in the Middle East must be obvious: a fair and equitable global order, free from foreign interventions and occupations. It is not acceptable to start a regional war through countries like Iran that have remained outside history. It is to put some of the darkest groups and structures the world has ever seen on the field and initiate a religious war. If there is to be an alternative to a unipolar world, it cannot be to bring back mediaeval thinking. The alternative is clear: rejecting progress, denying modernity and humiliating secularism. It is clear that this is to give unconditional support to the mullah regime in Iran and the reactionary mobs in Afghanistan, who do not even allow girls to enter schools and hang people on bridges in broad daylight just because they are anti-Western. It is clear that the objective is to exploit regional contradictions and impose an unprincipled, eclectic and outdated understanding on humanity by calling it an alternative. It is inconceivable that this is the result of all the devastating and disastrous experiences the world has undergone. If such a thing is to happen, the second pole must be established in a kind of mediaeval empire without time and space.
Multipolarity cannot be established in this way.Syria is now a hotbed for radical and reactionary groups of all kinds. It is clear that both those who are trying to break it up and those who are trying to "save" it have a great responsibility in this.
Politics requires balance. Rejecting something completely will always create a greater counter-reaction. That is dialectics. You must always find the middle way; otherwise, conflict will ensue. It is wrong to assume that simply being against something justifies its antithesis. And it doesn't…
Social reality is not based on black or white opposites. All differences exist simultaneously and are intertwined with each other. It is impossible to develop an in-depth understanding of the world if you see it as separated by thick lines on the basis of binary opposition.
Thousands of theories have been discussed in the history of thought, and still there are more to discover. There are millions of views surrounding them, and they are present not only in the modern world but also since ancient times. It is clear that people can be either liberal or collectivist in terms of their political position. Collectivism does not lead to totalitarianism or fascism, and liberalism does not guarantee individual freedom as a condition or guarantee of social freedom. It is clear that there are liberals who claim to "defend freedom" but cannot tolerate any opposing opinion.
Collectivism can be organised on various bases. If it is organised on the basis of conservatism, it is wrong. Liberalism is open to different interpretations. If it alienates people, imposes hierarchy and legitimises the trampling of the weak, moreover, if it dehumanises the person with the motive of competition, it is also wrong. I know this alienation is at the root of today's human destruction. Neoliberalism has destroyed the human species, trampled on ethics and replaced mutual aid with competition.
It is simply not possible to read about all the world's political ideas. You will never catch up, no matter how many lifetimes you have. Fanaticism is an obsessive feeling that is universal and unchanging. Those who are obsessed with it think with the same mental structure as if they were attached to a single centre. They are intolerant, unscrupulous and simply disgusting.
Now, let's get back to the topic at hand.
It was clear years ago that the conflicts in the Middle East were heading towards a dead end, but the main factors of the current situation could only be seen as strong tendencies. It was clear that contradictions were being exploited and potential fault lines were being persistently triggered. We were unable to comprehend the purpose behind this. It quickly became apparent that the colour of things was changing. However, it is always difficult to understand the nature of events while they are happening. We are experiencing things today that we will only see clearly in years to come. It is wrong to blame people. Even someone like me, who tries to follow the world, was only able to present a panoramic view on a personal level around 2018. It is very difficult, or even impossible, for someone who does not deal with the subject to diagnose the fragmented structure.
This is a process, and it must be resolved primarily among the peoples of the region. They will meet, negotiate and whatever happens will happen. People can no longer tolerate war.
I wish peace to the world and peace to everyone.
Be very careful when emptying prisons in such processes. We don't know who will come out. Let me be clear: our world is not as pure and clean as we might hope.
Let me be clear: the world is still a dangerous place.
